  Serving Size :: 4

  Cooking time :: 10-20 mins
  Course :: Desserts, Kid Friendly
INGREDIENTS
4 large ripe pears.
300 ml/1/2 pint/ 1 1/4 cups orange juice.
2 tsp ground allspice.
60 g/2 oz 1/3 cup raisins.
2 tbsp light brown sugar.
2 eggs whites.
Grated orange rind
to decorate.
METHOD
Using an apple corer, core the pears. Using a sharp knife, peel the pears and cut them in half.

Place the pear halves in a large saucepan.

Add the orange juice, allspice, raisins and sugar to the pan and heat gently, stirring, until the sugar has dissolved. Bring the mixture to the boil for 1 minute.

Reduce the heat to low and leave to simmer for about 10 minutes, or until the pears are cooked, but still fairly firm- test them by inserting the tip of a sharp knife.

Remove the pears from the pan with a slotted spoon and transfer to serving plates. Decorate and serve hot with the syrup.

VARIATION

Use cinnamon instead of the allspice and decorate with cinnamon sticks and fresh mint sprigs, if you prefer.
