Is it just me or does China Garden at Om Chambers, Kemp's Corner just keep getting sadder. As a kid, not only was it a treat to go there, it was a treat to get a bloody table out of them. It was like dining out New York Style. You met people you knew leaning on their cars waiting for the tables and like a rabbit hole, you buried yourself into one of the delicious alcoves that Nelson Wang had created. Then it shut down for 14 long years. Ling's Pavilion came up. Rumours were rife and other places specializing in Indian Chinese mushroomed and gained from the void. The Khar venue didn't bring back the hordes or the flavours. Even Kemp's Corner never regained its lost glory nor its plentitudes. Circling back as we like to, last week at lunch we had what we jokingly referred to as our private dining room. The inner sanctum of 6 to 8 tables were all empty. We specified no MSG and got it anyway. The wantons were only okay and the grilled fish was non specific. I don't recall coming away with a flavour. Just conversation. From the creator of Chicken Manchurian, this was not a great table setting. The service was ordinary and they did all but shut shop waiting for us to leave. It would have been nice to be offered some Chinese Tea. The Chi has shifted. And it makes me sad.
