In the utter madness of retail fantasyland that is Orchard Street is a little restaurant cum pastry shop. Canéle. It's just off the corner on Scotts Road and the place is like stepping off the merry go round to find yourself in a place of serene magic. It gets packed very quickly, but the chic name goes well with the designer desserts and elegant food that they also serve. Canelé is a dark dessert made from egg yolks and flour. Insight given to me by the delightful and well informed manager of Canele at Scotts Road. Canelé Pâtisserie Chocolaterie is helmed by Executive Pastry Chef Pang Kok Keong, but their elegant bites go well with the sharply tailored suits and deligner handbags that frequent the place. It is a dessert haven. And meringues in every colour dot the counter. They have darling packaging that can be a ‘Chanel'esque quilted white box or be frilly and fanciful. I'm no fan of Japanese Matcha, but Canele's delicate green tea mascarpone mousse with chestnut cream and almond crumble is a definite win. The thin crust pizzas are nice and crusty, the crab meat pasta, savoury crepes and elegant salads all come together to make this a place you can go back to...often. And not just because you are in the beighbourhood shopping. Chef Pang Kok Keong, the Executive Pastry Chef of Canelé Pâtisserie Chocolaterie personally conducts 2 1/2-hour classes which allows pastry lovers to learn the fundamentals on creating pastries and desserts. You can keep an eye on their website for schedules.
