Circling Back
Spices at JW Marriott
Rating 2 / 5
Where is the heat? The intensity of flavour, the delicacy of presentation at Spices. I went back for the Sunday Brunch. Its been a while and I was looking forward to elegant sushi, sinus opening green curry - light and pungent, and some peking duck.

The sushi wasn't exquisite and lacked the beauty that is the entire soul of Japanese cuisine. The Thai Green curry was too thick and sweet and utterly lacking the swift kick to the sinus you expect. The Prawn Wantons were just lacking in flavour and the Som Tam was niether sour not spicy. The Peking Duck was okay, the sauce too overpowering and the pancake a tad thick. The sense I was left with after having it was of Spring onion. That can't be the goal.

The Braised Tofu was nice. The tepenyaki veggies were preferable to the seasonal vegetables served in a white, thick, congealed mass. In the salad bar there was a nice grilled chicken. Sweetish sauve, reminiscent of Ketchup but still, not bad.

The dessert was utterly disappointing. Its the same as any of the Marriott buffets. There was a sad looking date pancake and some honey noodles on the side. The chocoholic in me doesn't get stuck over technicalities of cuisine but the Millieu Fullie pastry was soggy, most of the other desserts were eggless and too sweet. The two noisy kids sitting at the bar (on barstools!) Didn't help matters.

I drank my coffee mostly by itself. Asked for a comment card and said my piece. Because this is one of my favourite getaways in suburban Mumbai. You were assured of quiet, peace and outstanding food. Yesterday, the service is the only thing that shone.
